When I was little I thought the Milky Way galaxy was a giant Milky Way candy awaiting to be eaten. I didn't know how or when I would get there, but I was determined to find, and eat, this gigantic candy bar! This three layer Milky Way cake reminds me of my childhood dream. This three tiered cake is as endless as outer space. When you sink your teeth into the first chocolate later and into the caramel buttercream, it tastes like the flavors are endless. The only bad part about this cake is that is feels like the dishes in my kitchen sink are never ending, as well! If you can look past the mess, this is an impressive cake that tastes every bit as good as it looks!
Ingredients Cake: Two boxes chocolate cake mix or ingredients for our devil's food cake recipe; 8 finely chopped miniature Milky Way bars; flour for dusting the chocolates Caramel buttercream icing: 2 and 1/2 cups sugar powdered sugar; 1/2 cup butter; 3/4 cup brown sugar; 1/2 cup milk; 2 tablespoons shortening; 1/4 tsp. salt; 2 tsp. vanilla Ganache: 1 cup heavy whipping cream; one 12 ounce bag milk chocolate chips Garnish: 4 mini Milky Way miniature candy bars, broken in half Directions Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake cake according to directions on back of box or prepare our recipe (see link above). Finely chop miniature Milky Way bars and roll in flour to prevent bars from sinking to the bottom while baking. Fold into batter. Pour batter into three 8x8 pans. Caramel Frosting: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the milk and brown sugar. Whisk until sugar is melted (about 5 minutes). Remove from stove. Add vanilla, shortening, powdered sugar, and salt. Using a hand mixer, blend ingredients until smooth. When cake is cooled, invert onto waxed paper. Level the tops with a serrated knife. Place one cake layer on a cake stand or serving dish. Frost with 1/2 the icing. Place another layer on top and frost with remaining icing. Ganache: In a small saucepan over medium heat, allow heavy whipping cream to come to a boil. Pour chocolate chips into a bowl. Pour cream over chips and whisk until smooth. Allow mixture to thicken for several minutes. Pour over the top of cake. Garnish with miniature Milky Way bars. |
