My kids were craving s'mores this week, but I didn't want to go through the trouble of making a camp fire. So I decided to bake the s'mores in the oven. I wanted the outsides of the marshmallows to be browned, so I bumped up the oven to 400 degrees for a nice toasted top. Even though this is an easy dessert to make, don't leave the oven to Watch Food Network Star (which I may or may not have done!) Stay close by, and remove the s'mores as soon as they turn a deep golden brown color.
To add a little flair to this dessert, I decided to bump up the chocolate a couple notches. I added some semi-sweet chocolate chips to the mix, and sprinkled dark cocoa powder and vanilla extract over the chips. I was out of cinnamon graham crackers, so I used regular and added a pinch of ground cinnamon to the chocolate. This is optional, of course, but it does rev up the recipe if you want to give it try!
Now, it would be easiest to assemble this dessert in a square pan. However, I was excited to use my pretty new pie plate for our patio s'mores party, so I decided to go with that. My kids love to get messy when they eat s'mores so we used a spatula to dig into the pie pan for a heaping s'more. But if you error on the neat side, a small square pan would work better for keeping the s'more intact, especially since this is a double layer dessert. But use whatever suits your s'mores etiquette best! Just make sure to have the plates and napkins ready, These Triple Chocolate Oven Baked S'mores won't last long! Our were devoured faster than I could have started a camp fire. Here's how I made this recipe:
Ingredients: 2 sleeves graham crackers; 2 cups regular size marshmallows; 2 Hershey bars; 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips; 2 tablespoons dark cocoa powder; 1 tsp. vanilla; 1 tsp. cinnamon
Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Break graham crackers into squares and place at the bottom of a square pan or deep dish pie plate. Break Hershey bars apart. Place pieces of 1 bar, 1/2 cup semi-sweet chips, 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and 1/2 tsp. vanilla over the graham crackers. Cut marshmallows in half. Place half of the cut marshmallows over top of the chocolate. Repeat layers. Bake for 5 minutes, or until tops of marshmallows are golden brown. Remove from oven. Allow to cool for several minutes, so chocolate will continue to melt after being removed from the oven. Use a spatula to scoop s'mores onto serving plates.
