When I'm on vacation, my favorite thing to do is relax by the pool with a good book. Some of my vacations reads have been entertaining, but lacking in the plot department. While a light summer read is okay on occasion, this time I wanted to read a book that really captivated my interest with good writing. I was so grateful for a complimentary copy of Still Waters Run Deep, which drew me in from the first page.
The main character is Ali Rivers, who is a sharp-tongued homicide detective who is investigating the murder of an undercover cop found in an alley. The suspects are a ruthless biker gang called The Saints. As if this isn't stressful enough, Ali's mom is constantly medaling in love life and setting her up on lousy blind dates. Throughout all the struggles in her work and personal life, Ali keeps her cool. She is able to dole out witty comebacks to the teasing guys at the station and maintain her professionalism despite the sexual advances from, Blaze, The Saint's leader. She's able to relay on her girlfriends for support, although they often joke at Ali's expense. One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Ali, her best friend Carrie, and a friend named Chelsea are eating Carrie's mom's homemade Chicken Parmesan at Ali's place. They ask Carrie how she managed to get her mother's secret recipe. Carrie reveals she cried and said it was "over a man." "A dead one for Ali," she clarifies. "but it's the truth. Kind of." Still Waters Run Deep is the perfect mix of crime, humor, drama, and a little bit of romance (and failed romances along the way!) It's been awhile since I've read a book with such a range of well written characters. Still Waters Run Deep was a refreshing change from my usual mindless vacations reads. If you're looking for thrills, laughs, and surprises, you'll love this summer novel as much as I did! |
